These documents are required by the FDA to be provided to all patients receiving breast implants. The information provided is specific to each implant manufacturer, but is not specific to the reason for getting implants (aesthetic versus reconstructive). The risks and complications presented are based on old studies that do not take into account modern breast augmentation techniques (for example, using implant insertion funnels) and give only the worst possible chances of a complication, but do not give the actual average risk, which is much lower. In general, the risks are higher when implants are used for reconstruction after breast cancer, but much lower when used for aesthetic breast augmentation, especially when done by experienced plastic surgeons.
