For some people, the shape of their noses can be a source of frustration. They may feel unhappy with its size or its placement on the face. A rhinoplasty — otherwise known as a nose job — can change the size and shape of the nose to achieve better balance and symmetry in the facial features.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is one of the most popular types of plastic surgery available today.
There are several common concerns that rhinoplasty can address. These include reducing the size of a bump on the nose, narrowing the nasal tip, straightening a crooked bridge, or fixing asymmetry. Rhinoplasty can also balance facial features by reducing the overall size of the nose.
Most patients who decide to undergo a nose job are very happy with their results.
What’s Involved in a Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty is a nose surgery performed to change the overall shape or size of the nose. Outside of improving the appearance of your nose, it can also help to address issues associated with breathing through the nose.
It’s not uncommon for people with breathing issues to have difficulty with exercise, disturbed sleep, or sleep apnea. In many cases, these issues can be resolved with a rhinoplasty. Fixing medical issues associated with breathing can be combined with fixing cosmetic concerns so that a patient only needs to undergo one recovery period.
Many people believe that rhinoplasty involves breaking the bones in the nose, but this is not often necessary. Instead, problems are addressed by using small incisions inside the nostrils that are relatively invisible after the nose has healed. In some cases, bones may be smoothed, especially to resolve issues relating to bumps in the nasal area.
What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?
There are several advantages to undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure. A few include:
If you’ve disliked the size or shape of your nose for some time, a rhinoplasty can help you achieve the look you desire. Once your nose heals, you’ll likely appreciate its new shape and balance with the other parts of your face.
The desire for a more aesthetically pleasing nose is one of the top reasons people choose to undergo a nose job.
Improve Breathing Issues
For those who have difficulty breathing at night or during exercise, a nose job can significantly improve a person’s quality of life. Those who undergo the procedure and benefit from better breathing find that they can be more active and have fewer problems sleeping during the night.
Patients who have sinus problems may also significantly benefit from nose surgery.
Restore Facial Symmetry
A nose that doesn’t have the appropriate balance with the facial structure can appear misshapen or crooked. Fortunately, a nose job can help to address these issues. Patients are left with a nose that has better symmetry with the rest of the face.
Fix Birth Defects or a Broken Nose
Rhinoplasty can help fix birth defects associated with the nose. If you have previously broken your nose and are unhappy with the corrections that were made when it was repaired, a rhinoplasty will help address your concerns.
Nose surgery is especially helpful for those who have experienced an accident, such as a car wreck, that damaged their nose.
Am I a Good Candidate for Nose Surgery?
To determine whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty, we ask you to speak with Dr. Karol Gutowski and discuss what you want to achieve by undergoing a nose job. Be prepared to answer questions about your reasons for seeking a nose job and your expectations for the procedure.
Before nose surgery, younger patients’ features must have fully matured, which usually doesn’t occur until at least age 16.
What Can I Expect During a Nose Job?
Before undergoing a nose job, you’ll meet with Dr. Karol Gutowski to discuss your treatment goals. Be ready to provide Dr. Gutowski with your full medical history. You should also bring a list of any medications that you are taking.
During the consultation, Dr. Gutowski will examine your nose and review your medical history to ensure that you are an appropriate candidate for nose surgery. He will also give you a set of instructions to prepare for the surgery.
On the date of your rhinoplasty surgery, you’ll be given anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Dr. Gutowski will draw guidelines on your nose to prepare for the incisions and identify the areas to be corrected. Depending on whether you will have an open or closed nose job procedure, incisions will be made inside or outside of the nose.
An open rhinoplasty will include an external incision made at the bottom of the nose, between the nostrils. This approach means the incision is not visible in most situations; this area cannot be seen unless the patient tips their head back.
Closed rhinoplasties only require incisions inside the nostrils, so the incision will be fully hidden.
Once the incisions have been made and the areas of the nose have been corrected, dissolvable stitches will be inserted. These will be absorbed into the skin over the next week as the nose heals. Results from a nose job are permanent.
