At aFresh® MedSpa & Plastic Surgery, our focus is to help you feel happier with your appearance. We want you to look better, we want you to be healthier, and we want you to have an increased confidence in who you are. One issue that might be affecting your self-confidence is hyperpigmentation, but there are options to treat it. Our professionals can work with you in determining which option is right for you and your skin condition.

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

When your body produces excessive amounts of melanin, parts of your skin become darker than others. This is the most basic explanation of hyperpigmentation. Your skin is broken into layers. The most external layer of your skin is called the epidermis, which is where melanin lives.

If you tan a lot, your skin becomes damaged. The result is forms of hyperpigmentation that are commonly called freckles and sunspots. The sun is not the only thing that can cause hyperpigmentation. Trauma to the skin can lead to it darkening. Excessive problems with acne can also cause this skin condition. This is why you see many individuals who have had acne in their youth battling in adulthood with the dark spots in the areas where they had their severe acne outbreaks. Fluctuations in your hormones can also cause these problems.

Options for Correcting Hyperpigmentation

Regardless of the cause, living with hyperpigmentation is a challenge. Some have been able to hide their condition with makeup. But this is only a basic cover. There are better treatments that can actually address the problem.

Chemical peels offer a form of skin exfoliation. Specially formulated chemicals are used to exfoliate your skin at varying depths, depending on your needs. As the old layers of damaged skin are stripped away, newer, younger layers of skin are able to come to the fore.

Lasers therapy have also been beneficial in removing the redness and darkening of the skin caused by this skin concern. If you are battling with hyperpigmentation, we invite you to visit us at Fresh Medspa & Plastic Surgery. Let our team work with you in developing a strategy to address your concerns.
