Choosing the right breast implant size is rarely a simple numbers decision because there is a wide range of implant types, volumes, and profiles available. Body shape, chest width, existing breast tissue, and the look you want from breast augmentation all go into the decision, which can make narrowing down the options feel challenging. Dr. Karol A. Gutowski works with patients throughout the Chicago area to find an implant that feels right to you.
Breast implant size refers to implant volume rather than cup size. Implant volume is measured in cubic centimeters (or cc), and each implant holds a specific amount of volume that adds fullness to the breast. Cc’s do not directly correspond to any particular bra size, both because bra sizing varies so much and because other breast implant factors can impact how large the breasts appear after surgery.
The same number of cc’s can look very different from one patient to another because of anatomical factors. A person’s chest width, shoulder frame, existing breast tissue, skin elasticity and overall proportions all affect how the implant will look once it has settled. This is why careful consultation and implant selection are so important.
Implant volume describes how many cc’s are in a breast implant, while profile describes how this volume is distributed across the chest. Profile affects how far the breasts project forward and how wide the implant sits against the chest wall. We will talk more about implant profile and its effect on the final shape in a few sections.
Saline breast implants are placed into the breast pocket first and then filled after they are positioned. Because they are filled during surgery, there can be some flexibility in adjusting the final fill volume to fine-tune symmetry or overall size. Saline implants also tend to feel firmer, which can influence how noticeable the added volume appears, especially in patients with less existing breast tissue.
Silicone breast implants are pre-filled before surgery and come in a fixed volume and shape. Because the size cannot be adjusted once placed, implant selection happens entirely before surgery and requires careful planning. Silicone implants have a softer feel, which can affect how the breast looks and moves once healing is complete.
A wider chest with broader shoulders can often accommodate implants with a wider base diameter without the breasts looking overly prominent, while a narrower chest usually requires a more limited implant width to avoid implants extending too far toward the underarm or center of the chest. Rib cage shape, spacing between the breasts, and overall torso proportions also matter, since implants must fit within the natural boundaries of your chest to look balanced.
The amount of existing breast tissue and the elasticity of your skin both influence how much volume can be added comfortably and how it will appear once healed. Patients with more natural tissue have better coverage over the implant, which can allow for a wider range of size options. Those with thinner tissue or tighter skin may need to stay within a more moderate size range to avoid visible implant edges or excessive tension.
Patients who are very active, participate in high-impact exercise, or have physically demanding jobs may prefer a size that adds volume but does not interfere much with movement or comfort. Larger implants can add weight and may be more noticeable during activities like running or strength training.
The same implant volume can be available across low, moderate and high profile options, but the way it is distributed changes. Two implants with identical volume can look completely different from each other depending on profile choice. This is why implant size is never chosen by volume alone, and profile selection is just as important.
Low-profile implants have a wider base and less forward projection and often work best for patients with broader chests or wider shoulders. This profile spreads volume across the chest rather than pushing it forward. Low profiles are often considered when the goal is to add fullness without too much projection.
Moderate profile implants offer a balance between width and projection and are suitable for many different body types. They can be used in patients with average chest width who want a full but not exaggerated look. Because the volume is distributed evenly, moderate profiles blend well with natural breast contours.
High-profile implants have a narrower base with more forward projection. They are chosen for patients with a narrower chest who want a more prominent look without extending the breasts toward the sides of the chest.
With so many variables involved, implant size selection can feel overwhelming at first. However, this decision does not have to be made alone. During your consultation, Dr. Gutowski will translate all of these details into practical options, helping you narrow down your choices based on your anatomy and what you want your final result to look like.
In-office sizing allows patients to see how different implant volumes may look on their own bodies before moving forward with breast implant surgery. External sizers can be placed inside a bra or top to give a visual and physical sense of how added volume affects overall proportions.
Digital imaging and 3D simulation tools can provide a visual preview of how various implant sizes and profiles may look once placed. These systems use photos and measurements to generate images that show changes in shape and proportion.
Dr. Gutowski will take precise measurements to help you find the right implant. They will also spend time with you talking about the type of look you want from your implants, whether you want subtle volume or more pronounced results.
