Lipedema

Do you suffer from symmetrical bulges of fatty tissue in your legs, arms and/or abdomen area? You may be experiencing lipedema, a disorder that causes an accumulation of fat under the skin. Lipedema most commonly occurs in women but can affect men as well. This chronic condition is often misdiagnosed as obesity and, while the cause of lipedema is unknown, it seems to run in families and could be hereditary. Lipedema can not only affect a patient’s quality of life, but some patients may also experience discomfort and pain in the affected areas. At aFresh® Med Spa & Plastic Surgery, we offer treatments for lipedema and our surgeons will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to best fit your needs and help you achieve optimal results.

What is lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition that results in an irregular accumulation and distribution of fat under the skin. This condition is most commonly found in women and typically affects the thigh, legs, and buttocks.

What causes lipedema?

There is no known cause of lipedema, but many doctors believe that is influenced by female hormones because it most commonly occurs in women and tends to begin or worsen during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

How can lipedema be treated?

Patients who are suffering from lipedema can benefit from a variety of treatments, including conservative modalities such as massage, compression, appropriate nutrition, exercise and physical therapy. If these treatments are not effective in reducing the problems associated with lipedema, liposuction and surgical tissue removal may be effective treatment options. While liposuction can treat and reduce the effects of lipedema, it is not a cure for lipedema and patients may need to incorporate diet and exercise changes and compression garments into their daily routines and lifestyle.

Why choose aFresh® Med Spa & Plastic Surgery?

Our surgeons are board-certified plastic lipedema surgeons who have been collectively treating lipedema patients since 2001. They have worked with scientists at the University of Chicago in researching lipedema surgeon and has used all liposuction devices, including traditional tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, VASER liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction, water-assisted liposuction, and laser-assisted liposuction(SmartLipo). Based on their experience with over 250 lipedema patients, they have found that power-assisted liposuction (PAL) gives the best results, is more efficient and more gentle than other types of liposuction.
