Dermal fillers do essentially what the word “filler” implies, and that is, fill in areas of the face that may have lost volume due to aging or that are pitted as a result of acne, while injectable neuromodulators, like BOTOX®, are used to improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles that have formed as a result of repeated contraction of the facial muscles. Dermal fillers can also be used to treat other kinds of scars, smooth out wrinkles, plump thin lips, and soften facial creases. Previously named Artefill®, Bellafill® is the first FDA-approved medical device for correcting acne scars. Bellafill® is made of a synthetic, inert permanent filler material known as polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA). 20 percent PMMA microspheres combined with bovine collagen and lidocaine to create an effective, relatively pain-free treatment for acne scars. Results can last up to 2 – 5 years.
The active ingredient in Belotero® is hyaluronic acid, which is a commonly used ingredient in other dermal fillers. Belotero® specializes in temporarily smoothing out and filling in moderate to severe nasolabial folds (also known as laugh lines). This filler can also be used to address sunken eyes, to achieve a rejuvenated, more youthful look. Belotero® is that little finishing touch on your face that will make you feel perfect!
Also containing hyaluronic acid, Juvéderm Voluma® XC is primarily used for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume loss in the mid-face. Natural-looking results can last up to 2 years with proper treatment and aftercare.
Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid filler as well and is FDA-approved for mid-dermal applications such as deep wrinkle correction, lip augmentation, laugh line correction, sunken eyes, and for creases around the eyebrows. Restylane® has the ability to produce dramatic transformations in the face and can last up to 6 – 9 months.
Radiesse® contains calcium hydroxylapatite and has been FDA-approved for esthetic facial augmentation. Radiesse® has been used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and treat facial fat loss. The list of areas on the face that can be improved through Radiesse® injections goes on and on. Wrinkles in between the eyebrows, subdermal support of the brows, fill out sunken cheeks, tear troughs, laugh lines, nose, lips, acne scars, etc. Radiesse® has a low rate of side effects and injection results can last up to a year.
The active ingredient in Sculptra® is poly-l-lactic acid, and this dermal filler can be used to help stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost to aging. Sculptra® is used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as laugh lines, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles. Results continue to appear several weeks after treatment and may last up to 2 years.
All dermal fillers are not created equal. Versa™, like most other dermal fillers on the market, has Hyaluronic Acid as the main ingredient. However, Versa™ is specially formulated with uniquely spherical and uniform particles, which contributes to the ideal amount of smoothness and volume being achieved with each use. Neuromodulators – injections of botulinum toxin commercially known as Botox and Dysport and Xeomin – can be used to treat excessive sweating. A minute amount of the neuromodulator is injected beneath the skin, where it is absorbed by nerve cells. It works by blocking neurotransmitters that encourage sweating.
Containing botulinum toxin type A, BOTOX® is used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. BOTOX® can also be injected into the vertical platysmal bands, or neck bands, offering a temporary reduction of wrinkles for a more youthful neck. BOTOX® injections usually take a week to produce a noticeable effect, and this can last 3 months.
Jeuveau™ is the most recent injectable by Evolus to be approved by the FDA for the temporary treatment of moderate-to-severe fine lines and wrinkles within skin. It is recognized as the latest and greatest BOTOX® alternative. Similar to BOTOX®, Jeuveau™ is an acetylcholine release inhibitor and neurotoxin which works by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles and inhibiting their ability to contract. The result is smoother skin, while preventing superficial aging flaws from forming in the future.
Dysport® contains the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A and is a prescription injectable for the temporary treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Dysport® treats wrinkles without freezing the surrounding skin in place. Untreated muscles still work normally, so you can still express your natural emotions. Most patients see improvements in the frown lines between their eyebrows in just 5 days after treatment, and results may last up to 3 months. Dysport®, as well as BOTOX® and XEOMIN®, can also be used to treat excessive sweating by blocking nerve signals to the sweat glands.
The last of our injectables containing botulinum toxin type A, XEOMIN®, is used to treat moderate to severe frown lines in between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles. Another concern that can be addressed by XEOMIN®, as well as Dysport® and BOTOX®, is a gummy smile. When a small amount in injected into the muscle that elevates the upper lip, it softens the upper lip elevation and less gum tissue is exposed. Results from a XEOMIN® injection appear within a week, and can last 3 months.
