Get the Aesthetic You Want with Breast Implants

Many women think about what it would be like if their breasts were a different size or shape. It’s a common sentiment that may lead individuals to seek out breast augmentation surgery.

At the office of Karol Gutowski, MD, we offer safe, high-quality breast implants for patients who want to enhance the size and shape of their bustline. We’re happy to meet with you for a consultation in Chicago, IL, to discuss whether breast augmentation is right for you.

How Breast Augmentation Works

During breast augmentation surgery, we reshape and resize each breast according to your aesthetic wishes. The result is increased breast volume and a more rounded, even chest shape.

We make incisions around each breast and insert implants behind your chest muscles. This is the best placement for breast implants, as it does not interfere with breastfeeding. This method also increases your comfort as you recover.

We can also reposition your breast skin and nipples to give them a lifted, perky appearance. This technique makes your chest look fuller and more youthful.

Breast augmentation is typically a same-day surgery, which means that you can go home after you wake up from anesthesia. You’ll likely be at home recovering within 24 hours of your breast surgery.

Breast Implants: Saline vs. Silicone

There is no right answer when it comes to choosing the type of breast implants you want. Different implants are best for different patients. The type you choose largely depends on the aesthetic and feel that you want for your breasts.

Saline implants contain a sterile saltwater solution. Most saline implants are similar in size, shape, and feel. They may feel firmer and appear rounder than silicone implants.

Patients ages 18 and older can be approved for saline breast implants.

Silicone implants are filled with a silicone-based gel. This gel’s texture makes your breasts feel softer and more natural. Silicone implants also vary in size and shape, making them appear less uniform.

Patients ages 21 and older can be approved for silicone implants. Mature patients often choose silicone implants for their natural aesthetic and feel.

We will discuss your options with you during your initial consultation for breast implants. We want to make sure that you make an informed decision and are happy with your results.

Breast Implants — Frequently Asked Questions

Our patients ask us similar questions when they come in for breast augmentation consultations. We want to give you the facts so you can decide for yourself whether this procedure is right for you. If you need clarification, feel free to call us or ask during your in-person consultation.

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Breast augmentation produces long-lasting results. When you get implants, you likely want to keep them forever. In most cases, patients can safely keep their implants for 10 to 20 years.

After that, you may need an additional procedure to change out or adjust your implants. We work with each patient individually to make sure their implants will last as long as possible. Many newer breast implants are designed to last longer than the implants of the past.

What Is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like?

You should plan to take at least one week off work after your breast surgery so you’ll have time to rest and heal at home without much movement. If you have a strenuous job with lots of physical labor, you may need up to two weeks off.

For the first few days after surgery, you should arrange for help with daily tasks. You may need assistance with childcare, household chores, and errands.

After a few days, you should be able to move around fairly easily. We recommend spending as much time as possible resting and avoiding lifting heavy objects. In doing so, you’ll protect the muscles and tissues in your breasts as they heal.

We will conduct a follow-up appointment after a few weeks to make sure that you feel and look your best. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call us.

Do I Need to Wear a Special Bra After Surgery?

After your breast surgery, you will need to wear a compression bra for a few weeks. The bra serves multiple purposes.

First, it helps reduce breast movement as much as possible. Minimal movement is best for your comfort and for the sake of your implants. Too much movement can interfere with how your implants settle into position.

Second, it keeps your breasts in a lifted position for long periods of time. Before your body has adjusted to the implants, it will need help maintaining breast perkiness.

After a few weeks of rest and recovery, you can go back to wearing normal bras. We still recommend using supportive sports bras at night if it’s more comfortable for you during your recovery process.

Will People Be Able to Tell I’ve Had Breast Surgery?

Your results will be more or less obvious, depending on the type and size of implants that you choose. If you select larger saline implants, your breasts will appear perkier, firmer, and larger. And if this is the aesthetic you desire, there’s no problem with that.

Silicone implants are more subtle in texture, and if you opt for a smaller size, there’s a good chance nobody will know you have had surgery unless you tell them.
