Is Eyelid Surgery the Right Fit for You?

Your eyes are often the first thing people notice about your appearance. You want to make a good first impression, which can be challenging if you have bulging or drooping eyelids. When these issues start to bother you or impede your vision, it may be time to consider signing up for eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty.

Dr. Karol Gutowski has the experience and skill you need to look and feel your best. If you are thinking about having eyelid surgery, here is everything you need to know about the procedure:

When Should You Consider Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) could benefit many patients who see a tired look around their eyes caused by aging.

Both men and women can take advantage of this procedure if they have depleted volume in the lower eyelid area. Bulging or sagging beneath the eye can be corrected with this treatment method. Alternatively, if you experience droopiness in your upper eyelid area, you may also want to consider upper eyelid surgery.

Many patients come to us because they don’t like the appearance of this excess skin above their eyes, but it can be more problematic than that: Vision may be negatively impacted by drooping skin hanging above the eyes.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery/Blepharoplasty

Most patients sign up for eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, to correct a cosmetic concern. They want their eye area to appear to be more youthful, minimize bulging, and make their eyes appear just a little bit more alert instead of drooping. Cosmetic reasons are one of the major benefits of having this procedure.

If you opt for lower eyelid surgery, it may reduce bags under your eyes. However, it may not necessarily improve dark circles. For added benefits, consider talking with our team about combining your eyelid surgery with a chemical peel to help minimize dark circles and improve the appearance of your skin.

The major benefit of having eyelid surgery is aesthetic; it improves the eye’s overall shape, which helps you appear to be more youthful. After your surgery, you may also find that you look more well-rested and alert.

Skin irritation caused by folds of skin rubbing up against each other will also be eliminated with eyelid surgery. This can give you greater comfort and minimize redness in the affected area, also a great benefit for your overall appearance.

Another key benefit of upper eyelid surgery is that it may result in an improvement in your vision without the need for glasses, contacts, or other corrective actions. Normal vision may be restored upon healing from your procedure, which makes the process both functional and aesthetic.

How Does Lower Eyelid Surgery Work?

All eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) procedures are performed under general anesthesia. The entire process takes less than two hours for Dr. Gutowski and his team to expertly correct the issues that you see in the mirror.

Lower eyelid surgery is a bit unique because there are two main options for how the treatment can proceed, depending on the quality of your skin:

  • The first option for treatment deals with bulging and sagging beneath the eye. In this case, a small incision will be made below the lash line, and the extra fat or skin will be removed.
  • The second type of lower eyelid surgery can be done only if your skin has excellent elasticity, but it is the preferred option to minimize scarring. In this situation, a transconjunctival incision is made on the inside of the eyelid. Because this incision is not visible under normal circumstances, you may prefer this procedure if it is possible.

How Does Upper Eyelid Surgery Work?

If your vision is impeded by drooping skin over your eyes, then upper eyelid surgery may be the best fit for you. Under general anesthesia, your procedure will take roughly one to two hours to complete. Understanding the process can put your mind at ease before you head into our office on the day of your surgery.

Your doctor will make an incision in the natural fold of the eyelid. This allows us to remove the extra fat and tissue causing your aesthetic or functional issues. Doing so allows us to lessen bulging in these key areas. In some instances, the fat will be repositioned instead of taken out entirely.

Drooping skin will also be treated effectively during this stage of the procedure. Dr. Gutowski and his team will trim the excess skin and close the incision with fine sutures.

Does Blepharoplasty Help with Fine Lines?

Aging is a natural part of life, and it often comes with the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles. If you’re looking to address the appearance of fine lines around the eyes, also known as crow’s feet, our treatment team can help you to explore injectable treatments that can be done in tandem with blepharoplasty to address fine lines.

A complementary procedure such as Botox or a facelift may be able to produce the results you desire if you also want to minimize fine lines around the eyes. Our team can help you decide on additional skin treatments to help you feel rejuvenated and look your best.
