Are Juvederm Results Immediate?

At afresh(R) Med Spa & Plastic Surgery in Glenview, IL, we offer aesthetic services to help our clients achieve any aesthetic goals they may have. Among the most popular treatments is Juvederm, an FDA-approved, hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler designed to smooth away lines, wrinkles and folds, improve the symmetry of lips and augment the cheeks, among other long-lasting benefits. Here’s what you need to know about the results.

Are Juvederm Results Immediate?

Yes. You will see the initial results of Juvederm immediately. For example, you will notice immediately after the medication is injected that your skin is volumized. However, you may not experience the full effects of treatment immediately.

How Quickly Do the Final Results of Treatment Materialize?

How soon you can expect to see the final results of your treatment depends on a few factors. Primarily, the speed of the final results is driven by the results you’re looking for. If you’re looking to treat fine lines around your mouth, nose or eyes, your final results may be visible within 24 hours of treatment once the filler has finished settling into place.

If, however, you’re looking to augment extremely hollow cheeks, you may need multiple treatment sessions spaced roughly a week apart. In such cases, you may not see the final results of treatment for approximately 3.5 weeks after your initial session, as it may take up to 72 hours for the filler to settle after your final session.

How Do I Hasten the Final Results of Treatment?

If you don’t want to wait 72 hours to enjoy the final results of treatment, you’re not alone. If you’re anxious to see your ideal results, we will massage the medication into the treatment area gently to help it work its way into the deepest layers of your skin.

How Many Sessions Will I Need to Achieve My Ideal Results?

Everyone’s aesthetic goals are unique. Therefore, you need to come in for an initial consultation to determine how many sessions you will need to get the look you want. During this consultation, among other things, Dr. Gutowski will assess the physical structure of your skin to determine how many sessions you will need to achieve your ideal results.

How Long Does it Take to Prepare for Treatment?

Most people can receive treatment as soon as they know which formulas they need to achieve their desired aesthetic. However, depending on your unique situation, minimal preparation may be required. For example, this treatment is not recommended for individuals who have had an active skin infection or sunburn within two weeks prior to treatment.

Furthermore, it is not recommended for individuals who have had an active viral or bacterial infection in the past two weeks. Therefore, if you have an infection, you will need to treat your infection or wait for it to run its course and then wait a couple of weeks for your body to finish recovering from the infection.

Other Preparation Steps

During your initial consultation, Dr. Gutowski will review all of the medications and dietary supplements you are currently taking. You may need to stop taking certain medications and dietary supplements for a few days, such as NSAIDs, MAOIs, fish oil supplements, and vitamin E supplements.

Any medication or supplement that is taken to thin your blood, or which has the potential side effect of blood-thinning, creates the risk of bruising after treatment. To mitigate your risk of bruising, you should wait until such medications or supplements are out of your system before receiving treatment.

How Long Do the Results of Treatment Last?

The longevity of treatment results depends on several factors, including the formulation used to achieve your desired results, the extent of the benefits required, and whether you come in for maintenance.

The Effects of the Formulation

One of the most significant impacts on how long your treatment will last is the formulation used to achieve your desired results. For example, the original formula was designed to treat fine lines and moderate wrinkles around your mouth and nose and should last between six and 18 months.

Formulations designed to add subtle volume to your lips, such as Volbella, typically only last a year due to the physical properties of the hyaluronic acid. Contrastingly, more robust formulas, like Voluma, are designed to have significant lifting properties. Therefore, the results may last up to two years.

Which Formula Is Right for Me?

During your initial consultation, after Dr. Gutowski has evaluated the physical structure of your skin and discussed your aesthetic goals with you, he will advise you regarding the most effective formulas to achieve your desired aesthetic. Just don’t be surprised if you need several formulas to achieve your ideal aesthetic if you want to improve the appearance of several parts of your face.

The most common formula used to augment the lips is Ultra XC because the volume it adds is subtle. Most people looking to augment their lips without implants are looking for that subtle, natural-looking correction, usually to the symmetry of the upper and lower lip or left and right upper lip. Voluma is most commonly used to correct moderate-to-severe volume loss and sagging due to its fair durability and robust nature.

The Benefits You Need

If you seek dermal fillers to fill in fine lines and wrinkles as soon as they become noticeable, there’s a good chance that your treatment results will last a lot longer than if you waited years to seek treatment.

Similarly, if you are addressing sagging skin due to significant cheek volume loss, the results of your treatment may not last as long as if you only needed a minor correction. Dr. Gutowski will advise you during your initial consultation regarding how long you can expect the results of treatment to last.

The Effects of Your Dose

Typically, the more dramatic the results you need are, the sooner you will need a follow-up treatment. However, your results may last a little longer if you receive a larger dose of medication.

Keep in mind, we can’t just inject a great deal of medication so the results will last longer. For example, we can’t inject two doses of medication into your lips so you need less frequent treatments. This will make your lips look larger than you want them to.

The Effects of Coming in for Maintenance

Most factors that affect the durability of treatment can’t be manipulated, such as how dramatic your results need to be to achieve your ideal aesthetic and the formula we need to use to get the look you want. You can, however, choose to come in for maintenance to maintain your ideal results.

For the longest-lasting ideal results, you should come in for a touch-up treatment every nine to 18 months depending on the formula used. For example, if you use the original formula to smooth away lines and wrinkles, you should come in for a touch-up treatment nine months after you have achieved your ideal results.

The dose used will be significantly lower than the original dose used to achieve your ideal results, but you will still be able to enjoy your ideal results for another year after your touch-up. If you received Voluma injections, you should come in after 18 months to maintain your ideal results for approximately another two years.

The Effects of Your Lifestyle Choices

Besides coming in for maintenance a few months before your ideal results will fade, you can extend the durability of your treatment results by making healthy lifestyle choices. For example, if you are using this medication to address sagging skin caused by weight loss, maintaining your weight will extend the durability of the treatment.

However, due to collagen loss, you will notice sagging eventually. This is an unavoidable part of the aging process without intervention from collagen-inducing aesthetic treatments.

If you are using this medication to smooth away lines and wrinkles, you should take steps to maintain the health of your collagen. All wrinkles that are not caused by the hyperactivity of underlying muscles are caused by volume loss due to a lack of strong, healthy collagen.

Lifestyle Choices to Extend the Durability of Treatment Results

Whether you’re looking to extend the durability of tighter skin or smoother skin, you need to make lifestyle choices to maintain the health of your collagen, one of the primary supporting structures of the skin.

One of the simplest ways to accomplish this is to remain hydrated and eat plenty of healthy protein. Other lifestyle choices you should consider include minimizing your consumption of alcohol and eliminating nicotine entirely.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Type of Treatment?

One of the most compelling benefits of Juvederm is that hyaluronic acid is hypoallergenic. This is significant because many dermal fillers include synthetic ingredients that are potential allergens. If you don’t know if you’re allergic to the ingredients, you must take a skin-prick test and wait several days to find out if an allergy exists.

However, even though there is no risk of an allergy to hyaluronic acid, a chemical compound found naturally throughout your body, most formulations come with lidocaine, a local anesthetic that numbs the treatment area. If you are allergic to lidocaine, let us know during your initial consultation and we will accommodate your medical needs by providing an alternative numbing solution.

Who Isn’t a Good Candidate for This Type of Treatment?

Since there is no risk of being allergic to the hyaluronic acid, very few people are poor candidates for this treatment. However, there are a few types of people who, according to the FDA, should not receive treatment. During your initial consultation, we will ensure that you do not fall into the categories delineated by the FDA that would indicate this is a poor choice for you.

For example, if you are pregnant or nursing, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not recommend this treatment for you. Furthermore, if you have a bleeding disorder, you should not receive injections to achieve anti-aging effects to mitigate your risk of bruising after treatment.
